The audit process is to validate the information provided by you in the application to PMI regardless of certification you have applied for. But PMI does it for a very small percentage of applications. Although I was not audited but I did a little research of how does it actually happen.
Its simple you might be asked to provide copy of certificate of the highest educational qualification, certificate of formal education in project management (PDUs) from an R.E.P, the project experience you have mentioned in application will be sent to you for verification by your manager or supervisor.
All of these to be mailed to PMI and that's it. You will get an e-mail from PMI to go ahead with the payment.

Dear Najam,

I couldn't agree more with you. I started this topic because PMI usually conducts the audit after the payment, but right now seems different. And i want to know what the PM and the PMP training provider think about this :)

That's probably a better process. When I was audited it was after I already paid from memory which seems a little strange. Then again, they have admin processes that aren't free, and I guess audits do take them some time and resources, so either way is ok.

Thanks for sharing this update. This is a better chain of approval and more practical with aligning the approval process with the audit process. This way once approved, the candidate can pay and focus where the focus should be, on the exam. My audit email came as soon as I submitted payment.

I registered for pmp exam in May 2017, the request was audited before payment. I got approval within 2 days with green signal.
I attempt for exam on July 10 and succeed.

Thanks for sharing your experience Sulaiman,

i think maybe this process (audit before payment) is just run by PMI in 2017 therefore you were subject to that new process.

Congratulations for your success to earn PMP (i guess in the first attempt) :)

Like my colleagues, I was audited. When I had to first withdraw my application, I was only refunded a portion of my payment. When I re-submitted a year later, I paid the full price then was audited.

While the link provided by Sisca seems to imply a different sequence than what we experienced, I'm not convinced that they have in fact decided to wait until after the audit before requiring payment.

When you check the FAQ, the last audit question is "What steps need to be taken when an audit candidate decides not to proceed with the audit?" (Which is what I opted to do.).

The answer given is:

If a candidate chooses not to complete the audit, it is considered a failed audit due to non-conformance. A candidate may reapply after one year. At that time, a new certification application and payment must be submitted, and the application will be subject to a re-audit.

Maybe the FAQ hasn't been updated but the answer clearly states that payment will happen before the audit.
