Greetings fellow PMs,
I would like to get some inputs on the best practices, tools that you have been using in order to manage your project financials/costs. Project Server/Professional is great tool, but it does comes with some limitations so wanted to check hows everyone doing. Saving Changes...

To be honest, I am using a microsoft xcel spreadsheet mainly based on EVM. At corporate level we use HP PPM tool which contains EVM method embeded but it is a mess. Saving Changes...
I'd echo Sergio's feedback - while MSP can certainly handle variable and fixed costs associated with people and non-human resources, the flexibility of Excel and the greater availability to non-PMs often makes it a better solution until your organization's needs are sufficiently complex to justify a true enterprise project cost management tool.

Like Sergio and Kiron, we have a PPM tool to do the heavy lifting and use Office for data presentation.

What PPM tool do you use, and how the integration between the PPM tool & Office/Excel looks like ?

Our PPM tool is Entry's TeamHeadquarters. Integration is done mostly through CSV exports and Project imports. We do have some of it done via ODBC access to the database, especially for reports..

In the last company I worked for (a large bank), PMs used a structured Excel workbook to manage their forecasts and then at scheduled intervals uploaded that data to CA PPM (formerly Clarity). Resource labor actuals were directly entered in CA PPM via its timesheet functionality, and non-resource actuals were imported from other financial systems.
