I don't think anything special happens here at JP Morgan Chase. Hard to tell as Project Managers are scattered across the business units with pretty much no centralized corporate governance. At least as far as I can tell; I've only been working at Chase for less than 2 months.

Although the creator of the day was a PMP, it has been associated with IIL, not PMI. That may explain a little bit of the recognition problem. I think PMI is maybe a little bit jealous that it wasn't their idea.

IIL an R.E.P. I presume PMI is quite happy to let them take the lead. I noticed that PMI and PMIef are both sponsors of their event.

A number of larger companies use it as a method of raising awareness and interest in the profession. I recorded a webinar earlier this month for use in Nokia's 2017 IPM Day, and when I was with TD (a large Canadian bank), our EPMO organized a full day of events to help internal staff learn more about project management.
