By all means get involved with the non-profit sector in your local area. The problem you will likely encounter is that they have no idea what a Project Manager can do for them, unless they have fairly intelligent leadership. So, you have to go to a couple of board meetings, find out what you determine the problems to be, and then offer a solution to them. The really effective use of your time is creating a solution or program that multiple non-profits could benefit from, like combining fund raising efforts, or utilizing the same team of resources in seasonal work for multiple agencies. (In Winter we feed the homeless, in Summer we build houses)
