Should PM.com use a captcha code to stop spammers?

If forum members had to enter a Captcha Code before publishing any question, answer, comment, article etc, we might get rid of these annoying spammers.

Too easy to create an account, simple Facebook account and free!
Then you can post and SPAM.
What about no post or limited post for free/facebook account!

I am pretty sure PMI are working on this as Marjorie mentioned -There are so many things that could be done for sure but they need to ensure it does not create inconvenience to users. Cheers !

Sante, this would be a good first step. But also an intelligent system that perceives abnormal patterns and block IP’s can also be in the real of possibilities.
Agreed Ivan

There's a lot that can be done. Captcha, profile requirements, underlying site security, etc. Just needs to be implemented. It's all out there. There are no new trails we're forging here. Basic stuff ...
Yes Andrew, they just need to flick the switch so to speak.

Actually, it could hurt. Captchas work because they force the user to do someting. Some captchas are more involved than others.

It would be prudent to make sure the level of security does not push away people due to inconvenience. (Think of airport security...)
Stéphane, most entries on this website require something akin to "Are you sure you want to...". Perhaos the captcha could be incorporated in the same window. Kind of a half step.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all very much for your concern. We were hit very hard and caught off guard by spammers over the US Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Captcha is implemented, however, those who have been on the site and participating for a significant amount of time may not see it. This includes most of you here. While captcha can slow down a spammer, it does not stop them from posting entirely. Additionally, we moderate the site regularly, have site security that allows us to catch them as quickly as possible, and other measures are in place that help us keep the community enjoyable for all users.

The last thing we want to do is lock our system down to the point where using it is an unnecessary burden on legitimate project managers. However, recent events demand that we keep evolving as spammers find new ways to enter the community. With that said, we are making some changes as a result of this latest onslaught.

Thanks for all your help in reporting spam and caring about the health of our platform!
Thanks for the update Marjorie, and look forward to the changes.

I actually like the fact that privileges are tiered here. As Marjorie pointed out, newer users have the captchas until you reach a certain threshold of involvement. Perhaps the threshold should be raised?

Spammers would exceed the threshold of involvement.

Must be a way to block using "time since account created", would make uninteresting for Spammers!

I appreciate the steps projectmanagmeent.com has taken, with the implementation of Captcha as well as the ability for members to report accounts. I have wondered what else could be done, possibly blocking IP addresses of known spammers? I have also seen on other sites a pop-up that confirms "I am not a Robot".
