Team members are complaining about spending too much time in meetings to update project status. My understanding is that people often feel that this is not the best use of their time.

What tools or solutions do you use that allows team members to report back on project tasks instead of just relying on project status meetings?

I use Smartsheet. It is a great tool and PMs can easily send update requests to task owners, even recurring weekly if needed. It is less costly than MS Project and unlicensed users can do everything except create and edit new sheets. There is a nice dashboard option for management and sponsor to see real time updates. When we go into our weekly status meetings, it is just to review the projects that need attention or escalation.

I send an email every Friday evening with the activities list to be completed/have progress including the responsible resource. I ask the team to send their respective Activity progress every Friday Morning. I also ask them to send the reasons that affected the planned activities progress along with any Risks that can be foreseen. This is helping me to keep all the progress in tact along with Risks reviews every week.

I never hold meetings just to update project status. It's a horrible use of stakeholders’ time, and stakeholders are right to despise such meetings.
I gather task statuses from people via email, face-to-face conversations, phone calls, etc. before I meet with my team. I analyze the information submitted, then I send an email to the participants summarizing any significant information gleaned from the status updates. This enables everyone to walk into the meeting prepared to discuss important matters, instead of wasting time listening to people provide their statuses. It takes more effort on my part to do this, but it makes for much more productive meetings, and I show stakeholders that I respect their valuable time, which makes them much more likely to meet with me.
I agree, thanks for sharing

Hi everyone, one of the tools that I use for project status meetings is a dayli meeting with fixed time duration about 15 minutes. It works even if you are managing projects distinct to software development and is a good tool working with virtual teams
