Is there any benefit to renewing PMP early?

I have completed all of my PDU's but I still have a year before my renewal date. I am getting emails telling me to renew now, but it seems to me that it will just start the clock early. Is there some benefit that I am not aware of?

I renewed early and it is still based off the date I passed my test.

Dinah -

The clock won't start as of your early renewal date - you will still get the benefit of the full three years of your current cycle plus the three years thereafter.

I've always renewed early and the only downside I've experienced is that the majority of PDUs earned prior to the start of the next cycle won't carry over.

Thanks Kiron for your response on this.

As per the PMP Handbook, PMI allows for the transfer of up to 20 PDUs to the next CCR cycle provided that the excess PDUs were earned in the final year (12 months) of the current CCR cycle.

All true. I looked at my transcript the other day, and am only a few PDUs short of my next renewal, which isn't "due" until 1/2020. Guess I find a lot of the webinars and events really interesting, and also did the NODs.

I did the NODs as well and a lot of webinars and the conferences. Plus my company has its own "University" with lots of online classes available. I had my 60 PDU's within 6 months of passing the PMP and the 30 PDU's for my ACP within 2 months.

There is not any benefit, however, renewal doesn't mean that you start the clock again.

I hear you, Dinah. I got my RMP in July 2016 and had my 30 PDUs before the end of August, the same year!

I guess the only benefits of renewing early is that you can get it out of the way and can plan your finances.

Thanks

On the other hand, why give PMI your money earlier than necessary? They are the ones investing it, instead of yourself.

That is the only benefit, you are right so if that is if no big concern to you then it shouldn't matter.

True. And since I am going to try to have my company pay, I will need to wait until it comes due.

But remember, if you are PMI member you have a discount. Instead of paying 150 dls after, I just paid 47 with a Cupon that a friend shared with me. That is why when I changed my job (Just a few months after getting my PMP) I used my three weeks of induction to get all the PDUs and before the ending of my PMI membership I finished and renewed my PMP.
