Project managers would like to think that they have good working relationships with their team members and key stakeholders but in reality it could be very different. I think it all depends on how well PM handle conflicts and setbacks.

What are your tactics for influencing power? Is it possible to work with stakeholders and have no politics at all?

If others introduce politics into the work environment there’s nothing you can do to avoid them – the only question is how to best deal with them.
Personally, I do this by being completely transparent, and make it obvious that all my actions are for the success of the project. This enables me to make decisions that favor one party over another without actually taking sides; I do this by describing how my decision benefits the project. Some parties might not like my decision, but they can’t attribute it to politics.

Eric, I completely agree with you.
I would discuss with my manager, as soon as the project goals are defined, and request for the necessary authority to get the work done. I think, If I can stay in syn with my boss on what I'm doing and ensure that it's all aligned towards the same organizational goals then I'm good.

Anish -

The challenge is that the best laid plans may be led astray through the political machinations of stakeholders who resist the desired end state or how you are going about achieving it.

In such cases, appropriate use of politics to the organization and society's best interests is often required.

Agree with given comments. Yes, transparency and courage are the tools to deal with politics in a project in a positive or negative way. Personally, I believe courage is the key based on transparency.
