One of the most integral parts of individuals managing the project is discipline. While each leader has their own perspectives and methods of operations, I am curious to find what is the best way to build the discipline?

Do please share your perspectives, learnings, and experience around discipline.

Discipline is about deferring immediate gratification for long-term gain. By constantly practising control of your personal and professional urges, you can build the the discipline to achieve your goals.

For example, refrain from answering questions unless absolutely necessary. Instead, help people work through their own answers.
Stephane, thanks for your response I takeaway - deferring immediate gratification, constantly practice, control urges, focus achieving goals, responding relevant communications, helping people find their own answers. Excellent inputs. I appreciate it.

Definition of discipline: "the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience". Is you like to be successful in project management then search for other term. That is the problem with culture. I understand you are from India where the culture is totally different like in South America where I am from. At the end, the term must not be used in project management unless you are using it in this other definition: "a branch of knowledge, typically one studied in higher education".
Sergo Luis Conte, I agree with the dictionary definition. While we refer that meaning, it does also mean something different in the context of individuals understanding.

I am curious to learn what the best way to build the discipline (not from punishment point of view) That also dos not reflect upon the culture, as I mainly managed projects for American customers as well in India.

To agree with you I am not using the term in project management but referring it to the context of individuals who manages projects. The term can be considered under Leadership, PMO, Resource Management. Thanks for your guidelines. Appreciate that.

Is not about a definition into the dictionary. Is about what it is. Let me put it in other context. I am profesional tennis coach. If the same about the use of the word. Punishment could be any type of punishment. You have to define it if you will use discipline word applied to your profession. That is because culture is a must to understand. For example, talk with people into army forces and you will understand what they understand and what they feel about discipline in that context and culture. My point is: words expressed the way you thinking and behave. Take care about that.

I think collaborating with team members in planning and decision making is the best way to go. Involving all the team members to share their thoughts on matters related to project and giving the team feedback at the appropriate time will help them in knowing how they are progressing in their work. This way, they will not move away from the project work that would lead to indiscipline.
