The Standard for Project Management

The standard for project management is heavily referenced in PMBOK version 6. It's also included as "Part 2" of version 6.

Has anyone ever seen this standard as a stand-alone document? It's an ANSI standard ANSI/PMI 99-001-2017, but it seems to be often confused with the PMBOK version 6 itself. I've only seen it one place ($149 USD!)

Are the PMBOK guide and the ANSI standard tied together? Does noone else use this standard?

I just checked with the ANSI standard webstore -- and can't find it. This list is based on an RSS feed from the PMI standards department. I'm confused. No Project Management Standard?

I found:
- Combined Standards Glossary - Third Edition

- PMI FS-POM-2006 (Portfolio standard)
- PMI FS-PRM-2013 (Program Management 3rd edition)
- PMI PSF-EVM-2011 (Earned value 3rd edition)

- PMI PSF-S-2007 (Scheduling 2nd edition)
- PMI PSF-WBS-2006 (WBS 2nd edition)
- PMI SE-PMBOK-GE-2006 (Government extension to the PMBOK 3rd edition)

The PM Standards in the USA that are approved by ANSI were driven by PMI for the purpose of its guides. So the standard for managing a project is published in the PMBOK Guide as Chapter 3 in 3rd and 4th edition, as Annex 1 in 5th ed. and now as Part 2 in the 6th edition.

I do not know if you can buy it as a separate document.

There are numerous other guides and references published by other organizations but I do not know if they are ANSI stamped

I was part of the group of authors and reviewers. As you mention the significant difference into actual PMI´s publication is you have both: the Guide and the Standard. PMI PMBOK Guide standard number is ANSI/PMI 99-001-2017. Then same for the PMI Standard. The difference is the piece of work registered is the Standard, not the Guide. If you read the cover of the Guide you will find a short statement in reference about it.

I understand that the guide itself is not the standard, but the standard is included as part 2, However, I went to the ANSI library and looked for JUST the standard the guide references: PMI 99-001-2017. but it’s not listed. It seems to me that if it were an ANSI standard, it would be listed by ANSI.

In my earlier message, I listed all the PMI related ANSI standards.

Now I understand. What I know is the certification has been made and because of that the number the ANSI has assigned. Why is not in the list? I do not know. I think if it is important for you then you have to ask to the PMI.

Version 6 still isn't listed as an ANSI standard far as I can tell. I go to

https://www.standardsportal.org/Default.aspx

Then search on this page: https://www.standardsportal.org/usa_en/key_information.aspx

for ANSI/PMI 00-001-2017 And get "no results"

When I looked at the "Trade Associations: Project Management Institute" It says that the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) Third Edition is a standard. (this page: https://www.standardsportal.org/usa_en/tra...tions/pmi.aspx)

Quite surprising!
