Why not setup a Kanban board with the team? That will cut down the focus of touchpoints (daily or weekly) to focus on blockers which is really where the emphasis should be.
Depending on the tooling available, could also gather this info online in advance of touchpoints...

In my experience I would generally caution against relying on Project team members to provide weekly status updates. Unless its absolutely required, I find its better to conduct weekly status meetings with the team and you record the progress and status of the project to be communicated to the stakeholders.
