I use the Kanban board - use a cloud based free tool Trello. If a need a more detailed update, I use my regular check-in meetings.

For the "business end" I try and keep things simple, after early project establishment & agreement of deliverables then project status updates focus on three basic questions (1) progress of last weeks targets (2) "blockers" and (3) this weeks targets.

trac (https://trac.edgewall.org/) is a opensource project management tool. Using trac, team members status can be tracked and customized reports can be generated for projects. We have created customized weekly and monthly status report for few projects and it worked very well.
