Business relationship manager role and its relation with Project Managers
Network:20

Today the business relationshio manager is the role that has the main contact of functional users, to help them make the process of understanding their demand and start a project if everything is in place for it; If this role is more focused on the user facing, what should be the interaction between a BRM and a project manager, before the project starts, during its excecution and at the end?

From my point of view, the BDR is responsible for identifying, evaluating and selecting the best option to be developed from a project, from the business point of view. During the implementation of the project, the BDR must be a support of the PM, contributing the business point of view and covering any doubts that may have about the business case. After the closing of the project, the BDR is the one who must evaluate that the results of the project implementation comply with the business objectives set forth in the business case.

I haven't come across this title before, but Business Leader or BU Manager or even Sponsor seems to fit what you have described. In any case it won't change what I am about to say: in any organization, there are certain individuals that act as "glue" between the various competing entities within the company. Whether it be business units, departments, projects, people etc. In my experience these are business leaders, and in many cases they do provide a valuable conduit between project heads and functional heads, and in some cases they are in fast the sponsor.

Hi Sante, BRM is a certified title issued by BRM Institute with detailed methodology behind. I’m one of them:) BRM is a connector between business whether it is a user, business leader or executive management and IT department leaders and specialists. BRMs typically act in larger organization with IT projects delivered for internal customers. Because in such case it’s not possible to select a single person or small group of people to represent the customer, it is BRM whose job is to understand the needs and be face of a customer fully participating in a project. For instance I was BRM in organization of 4000 employees and we did large change projects so real customers were in number of hundreds distributed all over Europe with country specifics. BRM is then responsible for putting the scope together and getting the green light even before a PM is appointed. BRM is member of project management team, more a partner to PM then a team member subordinated to PM. BRM must have great both IT and business understanding to make it work, must be able to speak business and IT language.

Thanks Lenka, I will look into it a bit more. I am sure there are some around in Australia and I will bump into them one day; probably already have without knowing it :-)

Luis -

I've seen this role do everything from being a pure intake liaison whose work ends once a PM has been assigned to being closely involved in the requirements management process, working hand-in-hand with the BAs/BSAs assigned to the project.

I would expect there will be a hand off of knowledge and introductions from the BRM to the PM to help them succeed.

The institute was established in US by Vaughan Merlin, not so many years ago. If you are really interested you can go to the BRMI website and join discussion forums. I don’t know how many certified professionals are around the world, definitely not as many as PMP:)

BRM is a business analyst. Take a look to related documentation into the PMI, mainly the Business Analysis Guide and the Business Analysis Practice Guide, and you will have all you need. Into the Practice Guide take a look to "Collaboration Points". In that place you will find the answer to your issues and concerns. You do not need more than that, believe me. In my actual work place I am in charge to define BRM roles and process between others.

That makes sense to me Sergio, I thought it was more like a BA role.

Luis,

Business relationship manager is not a role I see. Would that be a Business Development Manager?

Your description would fit for many Business Development Manager in many Industry.
