What is your experience about PM hiring a relative of his/her or from Project Management team members.

Was it positive?
Did it cause unwanted side effect?
Is it done in your organization?

What about for training? internship !

I did not encounter this in one of my projects but I did recommend relatives for others projects. This is a very sensitive issue that needs to be handled carefully because it can create conflict of interest on so many levels and it could be misunderstood on so many levels too.

Rami,

Part of the reason for the question, misunderstanding is one.

Yes, as soon as it's disclosed and not creating conflicts of interests and bias in decision making process, all these constraints make such decision undesirable.
If my relatives can't serve for me can't recommender neither.

But relatives shouldn't suffer due to professional position but maybe fixing the root causes of why I can or I can't hite him.

Personally I will not work with my relatives due all reasons beside his competency.

I have not seen it in person, but have heard stories where it was done.

More often than not, it does not end well. There is always a question that arises of the conflict of interest for the PM - did they hire the best person or a relative? Did they conduct this hiring in the best interests of the project or was there something else involved?

Such business conduct guideline violations have led to involuntary separations of many project personnel - even the sponsor, in one case.

It would be recommended to hire a relative only when it can be demonstrated that the relative provides the best value for the project.

For pro bono services of the relative - there still are a lot of IP, NDA, and privacy hurdles to clear before the person can gain access to project information. Usually this game is not worth the candle, either.

Karan,

Hiring a relative when a clear leader in the domain, is usually not question too much in my experience. It need to be disclose.

Vincent -

Even if HR policy doesn't prevent it, I'd be leery about hiring relatives where there is a direct or indirect reporting relationship to me. Even if everything is done "above board", there could always be the perception of bias.

Project Managers during all the life-cycle must conduct projects coldly and objectively with professionalism. The right person must be put at the right place.Personally, I prefer have with relatives another kind of relationship than hiring them in a project.

Hi Vincent if this relative is the right man, I'd hire him but I'd be unconcerned about the consequences that would derive from this situation; the sanctions that need to be taken as well as the recompenses that need to be allowed.

To decide about that you have to check the code of conduct or code of ethic of the organization where you are working on.

Vincent -

My husband and I work for the same organization and due to his expertise, he has been a member of several of my project management teams over the years. The experiences have always been positive as we maintain a professional relationship at work. There have been times when the other PM in my organization has asked my husband and I to be on his project management team as well. We are known for our ability to work together and to encourage our team-mates to work together as well.

In my organization it isn't unusual to encounter siblings, couples, or other familial relationships within the employee pool. Some work together without any problems, others should never be chosen to work together on a project. I have had to remove related team members from projects before due their inability to work together. It comes down to knowing who works well together and who doesn't.

Absolutely, Vincent.

It needs to be demonstrable that the relative being hired is being hired for his/ her skills. If this cannot be demonstrated, potential conflicts of interest may arise and give way to unwanted consequences.
