There does not seem to be many job opportunities for a project manager in the R&D environment. I think that this is expecially valid in the pharmaceutical industry.
Has anyone else found this to be the case?

Afternoon!

While I do not conduct a lot of business in the pharmaceutical industry I can tell you from experience with the clients that I currently have in that industry that there is a need for PM's. However, I agree that the market in R&D is especially tight right now.. Are you in the Midwest? If so, try a couple of the companies located in Illinois (e.g., Abbott & Baxter).

Hope this helps!

Southern California is a good location in general for job hunting. While not quite the traditional pharma environment there are a lot of biotechs growing in leaps and bounds...

Why is there such a shortage of Project Managers in the R&D market? One reason could be due to that the project management profession is relatively new in this environment. In the future project management will become more accepted.

The R&D arena doesn't only need project management. It needs projects managment. Most R&D environments, whether pharmaceutical, telecomm, or any product development process is usually one of multiple projects sharing scarce skills (resources).

If PM has had a spotty history in these environments, I would point to the failure to first manage the larger system of shared projects in a way that they interfere with each other as little a possible.

True especially in life sciences basic research. I'm about to start a rare opportunity in this - but the job ad did not list project management training as required or even desired... Following the "learn on the job" passively model! Well until they hired me, that is ;) any tips for implementing PM strategies and tools in this environment that is void of other PM-aware individuals? Specifically I'll be in basic life sciences managing several small reach projects as well as resources management (equipment scheduling/training/maintaining) and some teaching so I'll be pretty busy.
