Present in every project hour delivered there is potential for price/value conflict. In other industries this resolved by an efficient market, and this is never perfect. As PMs we wrestle with ensuring value is delivered daily through our team. I hope you will share your experience, your tip on how you do this...

The current resolution mechanisms (how we contract and then deliver) I am sure could be improved. Today, the pressure is put on the PM to manage value delivered to the customer against cost. What suggestions do you have?

After responding, please look at www.neutraladvocate.com... I welcome feedback on an approach that aims to align parties around price/value conflict and support with resolution strategies... Thank you for your input and sharing...

We need to ensure that the team has a good understanding of why the project is being funded and create a safe environment for them to question decisions, requirements, practices or processes within the constraints of standards & policies which they perceive as being non-value add.

Hi Kiron, Thanks for your reply. Totally agree. We need ensure a good understanding of the "why". I love the concept of a "safe environment" to question and I assume learn.

Do you find working with internal team and/or with vendors or service providers fixed expectations set with management and/or via contracting gets in the way of responding to that learning?

We align the product as close as we can to the customers requirements. Everything inbetween is good project management.

Comes down to how the contract is constructed and how we treat external providers. If we treat them just like internal team members and apply the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" rule, then learning happens. If not, you get "us and them" behaviors...

Agreed. Kiron. At Neutral Advocate we are working with our first few customers. They want the commercial arrangement (at least shared risk) and no us and them... a collaborative relationship. I have a startup aiming to and am seeking feedback. Do you have 10-20 minutes to talk or have a coffee (I see you are in Mississauga?) I would like your feedback on our approach.

As Warren Buffet says Price is what you pay, value is what you get.
I believe the key is to have a clear project objective, what you want and why. Then build a good scope that balances the effort with the results. Of course good stakeholder buy in needed to assure the perceived value of the deliverables.
