Does humor play a role in professional project management? Do you remember situations where humor helped, for instance, to bond a team or to solve a conflict?

In my experience, humor plays an important role in getting team members to laugh at situations that may seem very overwhelming. I remember when one of my team member had issues with communicating in a timely manner, the joke we shared during the team meeting helped the individual to change his attitude. I think humor really provide a healthy, productive atmosphere when used properly.

Introducing the element of humor is good but it is importsnt to have the right sense of humor otherwise things might go out of control and blow out of proportions.

You need to know the time to make a joke. Regards.

Solid relationships with team members and other stakeholders help develop the climate of trust and respect where humor can be positive and constructive. I think humor is not a primary tool, but a welcome consequence of good work in the social areas of project management.

Appropriate humor is a good way to inject some much needed levity into the normal stress of working on projects. However, anything can be taken too far.

One needs to be able to "read" the room to see if it's appropriate or not.

Of course, in this age of over-political correctness, the types of jokes which are acceptable is also narrowing year-over-year...

I think humor in almost all situations is healthy. As Kiron said as long as it's appropriate.

I once had a Manager who insisted on abbreviating "Follow Up' in the status and issues report to FU. He did not notice the implications. It became known as the 'FU" report to the project team.

Ah yes but the "Follow Up" was originally a column heading. Under the column heading was the name of the person who had the action. When it got abbreviated the column heading disappeared and the row item became FU: Paul, FU: Sante, etc, Extremely funny and sad at the same time.

Appropriate use of humor can help stay focus. It could help relief a tense situation an bring back the team to a solution mode.

It's these idiosyncrasies in life that make it worth living sometimes, otherwise life gets a bit monotonous.
