Hi, I am doing an assignment and am struggling to fill out a lessons learned document for the budget.

I am looking for examples of what to put in the sections for:

Lessons learned that worked
What worked well the recommendation
Lessons learned that didn't work
What didn't work well recommendation

Any help is appreciated.

I am not sure I completely understand the question. The Lessons Learned documentation is something that [ideally] happens throughout the project but at a minimum as a deliverable as part of the project close. The LL is an opportunity to be honest about what happened and what could be improved.

What you document in the sections is based on your and the experiences in the project. Usually an organization uses a template.

Yes we need more information. Is this is am assignment about project and asking you about Lessons Learned, or is it LL for the assignment itself?

This is for a hypothetical project for a college assessment. I am just looking for some real-life examples...

Ok that makes sense, and since it's a hypothetical project then we can work on hypothetical lessons learned. Some lessons learned might include (one example for each of the four categories you posted):

Lessons Learned that Worked - In the last project, it was observed that senior stakeholder were not impressed with receiving so many status updates. So we decided to ask the stakeholders individually what kind of communication medium they preferred (ie. email, IM, text messages), how frequently, and in how much detail. We then collated that information and created metrics to measure the new approach and put that in our project management plan. At the end of the project, we surveyed the senior stakeholders and discovered their satisfaction ratings were well above even what we expected.

What worked well the recommendation - Implement the above methodology in future projects, and perhaps this time streamline the process to get feedback from the stakeholders during the project rather than just at the end, so the ability to change the process midway through the project is available.

Lessons learned that didn't work - One of the lessons learned from the previous project was to confront conflict more directly, so that problems could be resolved earlier. However, the majority of this project's resources were located in distributed teams in other countries, and also from countries that do not cope well with direct conflict. So this lessons learned failed to improve communication and resolve conflict, and in fact made matters a lot worse.

What didn't work well recommendation - Don't implement the above methodology in projects involving distributed teams in various cultural regions without first understanding that region and culture so as to customize the communication and conflict resolution technique to better suit the cultural diversity within the distributed team.
