I've been seeing a lot of job requisitions for "Transformational Project Manager". What exactly is meant by "Transformational"??

Modern day industry is often riddled with new keywords/terms/buzzwords to identify traditional concepts. I may be qualified to be a Transformational Project Manager, but I wouldn't know it if I don't know the context of the word Transformational and it is even more challenging when the recruiter doesn't know it either.

Is it referring to Digital Transformation? When I searched that is what came up for me.

The definition of this is: Digital transformation refers to the changes associated with the application of digital technology in all aspects of human society. Digital transformation may be thought as the third stage of embracing digital technologies: digital competence ? digital usage ? digital transformation, with usage and transformative ability informing digital literacy.

Or might it be a Project manager that will transform methodologies, like from waterfall to an Agile methodology?

I am not sure myself.

Thank you Dinah for your response. You and I share the same uncertainty of what this means. I wonder how many more share this uncertainty.

Unfortunatelly this type of new buzzwords jeopardizes the work of all of us. But I have to say that I was in that position (Transformation and Innovation Project Manager) few time ago when I led an initiative as the head of LATAM. Because it is a buzzword perhaps each place has its own defintion but in my case (and into others I have the opportunity to talk with) the name is because you will lead the intiative to transform the whole organization to a new objective (for example Agile to gain into agility). Those initiatives are created to transform the whole enterprise architecture which is composed by business layer, application layer, technology layer, security layer, information layer. For example, to change the organizational structure (from silos to something more integrated) and things like that.

Thank you Sergio. The fact that the definition of "Transformational" can be different from organization to organization helps in the sense that I, or any of us, can ask recruiters clarifying questions. If the recruiter doesn't know the answer, then they should ask the organization that originated the job requisition.

You are welcome. I think that people will see this type of request more often in the near future. But is like when you see "IT project manger" or something project manager. Organizations are requesting this type of things because they do not know what to do then instead of hire a project manager and getting subject matter experts they want the same person covering both roles.

Something better than what it was. I have worked on "transformational BPO" projects where the traditional model for cost reduction and low-end processing tasks were overtaken by a partnership model between the client and service provider where the latter would actually look at the client's business as their own, and provide improvements (unasked for) that would improve the client's business and thus the service provider additional revenue in the commission of said additional work. In fact some of these transformational models do away completely with the client/service provider relationship, and these two entities actually form a legal entity, in effect becoming the same company, both incentivized by ensuring the company succeeds. The collaborative nature of such a model is obvious. It not only reduces cost and process improvement, but it promotes innovation and market competitiveness. Buzzword? Maybe. Successful? If it's done right. As for Transformational Project Manager, I suspect it will follow along the sames lines as the example above, philosophically. But if you saw it in job adds as you say, then I would suspect it simply has to do with a Project Manager who manages transformation projects/programs within organizations.

This might be an attempt to blend the role of a PM with a Change Manager in terms of not only delivering the approved scope for the project but being directly involved with developing the strategy, plan and levers for implementing & sustaining the desired changes.

Yes...Change Management is coming into its own and the term "Transformational" is coming along with it.
It is also generally related to projects that are large in nature with high and far reaching impact to the enterprise. The way things are done will generally change drastically.
It requires more expansive thinking to that of solely delivering products or services.
