Change Management Certification?

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone in the group has experience with getting a Change Management certification? Are the potentially increased competitive edge and career opportunities worth the financial and time investment vs.those of non-certified professionals? If so, which of the leading programs would you recommend (Prosci, CMMP, ACM/CMI, any others)?

Interesting Question Ellie but I honestly have a neutral opinion about this but would be interested what other might have to say.

Really interesting discussion but I didn't have any idea about formal certification on change management.

However, I've studied many situation based question on change management while preparing for my PMP certification. That includes different roles and approaches of Project Manager, change of Sponsor, power/influence grid of stakeholders and so on..

I have gone through the ACMP curriculum (for the yet-to-be-obtained CCMP certification). It brings a lot of structure into the entire change management exercise - one that can be reused and bent to various requirements.

I really do not have any coverage on the other credentials, though. Will not be able to advise on the differences or benefits.

I did not know that there is a formal certification ..It was big thing in Dubai in 2000s. However a lot of companies moved on. I will join Rami about neutral opinion about it.

There was an influential member here that use to say we need a change management certification. Not to sure if a new one is needed.

Prosci which developed the ADKAR model tends to be one I see referenced frequently in Canada for job postings. Unlike the way the PMP gets used to filter out candidates for PM roles, I've seen references to CM credentials as being "nice to have" as experience & cultural fit is much more relevant and critical to CM roles.

I would look at the depth of OrgPsych content in the material and avoid programs that are too heavy into methodology or rooted in a different discipline (such as project management). Consider a degree from a University, too. Happy to share from my experience (M.A. at Columbia).

Yes and no Oliver, it really depends on the goals of the person choosing a course. While I agree that a generalized tertiary degree is beneficial (completing my second generalized masters degree now), a specialized one such as project management can assist many organizations because they generally take a theoretical and practical focus to the degree, including a relevant project/dissertation that can be applied to the student's organization.

Yes and no Oliver, it really depends on the goals of the person choosing a course. I got a Prosci certification a year ago. I think the training is invaluable, when it comes to dealing with organizational change. The challenge for our organization is acknowledging the need for that type of project. Or incorporating organizational change practices into projects that really need that kind of support. It's certainly something worth being versed in, so you don't go wandering blind into organizational change, without some background.

Thanks, all, for your input. Obtaining the PMP has greatly piqued my interest in other specialized areas such as risk, change, portfolio management, organizational maturity, etc. - the list goes on!

The number of specialties and corresponding certifications seems to be endless, so I am trying to gauge the value and ROI of obtaining a Change Management Certification vs. pursuing other areas of interest as mentioned above. E.g. does a CM certification hold the same "weight" as a PMP, or will having training/education & some hands-on experience in change management without the actual certification title be sufficient?

I can certainly appreciate the value of getting some additional Change Management education outside of what's discussed in the PMBOK, just trying to prioritize :-)
