Many of the hard and soft practices you develop to manage projects can be applied to operational work including:

- risk management
- budgeting
- forecasting
- team building
- conflict resolution

Since operations is an ongoing set of processes that have no end, there may be some areas that you can utilize your PM skill set in.

Leadership - Lead the same way of influence you would a project, not by the delegation sense where rules may apply in a manger position.

This ties in to the four behavior fundamentals.

Respect others, Listen, Clarify expectations, and Accountability.

Aside from that you can hold processes such as marketing or sales in a project manner. You can always set a start and finish date to run these areas with a specific goal or intention in mind. You can manage presentation projects the same way. Aside from overseeing the process from an operational standpoint, you can specifically key in on "active" projects that your team is out providing for your clients.

Maybe run weekly or bi-weekly team meetings with operations personnel. You can consider that a small project and discuss various objectives making sure everyone is in the "know" and communication remains open. This is a great way to clarify any operational expectations as well as earn insight from your staff. Feedback works both ways and is always positive if you set that in motion.

Use risk management skills from PM to your advantage operationally. You can also apply what you know in terms of setting budgets or financial goal markers. Make certain areas of operations mini projects to attack with specific objectives and specific dates.

These are just some ideas I have in mind. Hope it helps.

None skill will help you in operations. Operations is performed after the project deliver the product. So, the role that will impact on operations is the business analyst not the project manager. That is critical to understand to not fail.
