I would like to get my PSM which would help me grow my career until I can sit for my PMP early next year. I have a CAPM. I am finishing up my Bachelors this fall. I am active in my local PMI chapter. I will be applying for their mentorship program this summer. I am really chasing this career. I am trying to network as well.

I know that certs, with an understanding of them, helps make me a more attractive candidate. I feel the PSM would be helpful. So if you have any resources or tips how to prepare for it, please let me know.

Do you have experience as an agile lead/Scrum Master? If not, I'd avoid getting ANY agile certification till you do, and especially the PSM I as it will test your knowledge of what to do in specific scenarios.

A reasonable percentage of the questions are drawn from the Scrum Guide, but you can't pass the exam by just memorizing that guide.

Thank you. I appreciate the advice. I am not currently in the environment. I just recently joined a meetup in Chicago that teaches Agile. But this is good to know

You know what I would suggest. Don't worry about the certification just yet. Go ahead and pick up some books, maybe take some online training. (Scrum study has some free training. Udemy usually has some pretty inexpensive training. And webinars are available on this site) Get a good feel for what Scrum is all about. Then think about how you can pursue it. Can you apply what you learn to the job you do now? Work on getting that experience. Then you can decide if and when you will go for the certification.
There are other Scrum Master certifications that do not require experience. But are they beneficial? Will they give your career that boost? Maybe, Maybe not.
As for networking, stay right here. Some of the best people are on this site willing to give you advice along the way and help you in anyway they can.
Good Luck in your career path.

Dinah,

Thank you for the sound advice. That is a good plan. My father in law has some books he wants to give me about Scrum. I will pick them up this week. Thank you for your advice again. I have used Udemy before. I will get started on that this week

As Kiron said, the PSM I is a knowledge based exam. Here is how I prepared:

It i knowledge based so I would advise you to read the scrum guide and some other references and go for the exam. It is an interesting subject for sure.

Good Luck.

As Dinah said .. you are at the right place here. If you do not have the experience try to educate yourself by frameworks .. starting scrum, Kanban and so on.
I would focus in your place at collecting my 4500 hours and get my pmp first. Your area of project management is engineering and it is heavily dependent on predictive methodology waterfall.

The PSM would be helpful but as other colleagues have said, you need some experience behind you as learning the scrum guide won't be enough to pass that exam.
