Gender Equality on Organizational Performance in Project Organizations
Project organizations worldwide continue to face a significant gender imbalance, limiting their ability to fully leverage the benefits that diversity offers. Research consistently demonstrates that diverse teams exhibit higher levels of innovation, problem-solving, and decision-making than homogenous ones.
According to The State of Women in Project Management report (PMI, 2023), female project managers remain significantly outnumbered across all major industries, with the gender gap exceeding 50% in sectors such as construction, transportation, energy, aerospace, and information technology. While the North American region reports the lowest gender gap, at 39% women to 57% men, the Middle East/North Africa and Asia Pacific regions show the highest gaps at with female representation as low as 8% and 14%, respectively (PMI, 2023). The gender gap of over 50% favors male project managers in construction, transportation/logistics, energy, aerospace and many other sectors. (PMI, 2023).
Increasing women’s participation in project industries has been shown to improve project value, return on investment, and overall organizational performance. Research suggests that leveraging female talent in management fosters a competitive advantage, enhancing organizational financial performance and employee engagement (Baker et al., 2019).
