Many of us in the project management field are in touch with what is going on in the business world. But do you know about International Women’s Day? More importantly, do you know how to celebrate it and honor the women on your teams?

International Women’s Day (IWD) is held on March 8th every year and has its roots in the labor movement from the early 20th century. Its origin was with the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom in 1908, and it was brought back to the United States by suffragettes who worked with them. The concept is a positive one, and by wearing the chosen colors of purple, green and white on that day, you are showing solidarity and support for justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Purple shows solidarity, green represents hope, and white stands for purity.

For 2025, the slogan is “Accelerate Action to collectively forge a more inclusive world for women.” You can demonstrate your allegiance by wearing a purple ribbon, much as you might wear a pink one to support people with breast cancer. But the challenge is how to pledge allegiance to furthering the cause without being disrespectful to anyone.

This day, passed by the United Nations in 1977 as an international day to be celebrated, is an appropriate reminder to honor women. Their acceptance and respect can unlock equal rights, power and …
