Social Media for Community Stakeholder Engagement in Infrastructure Projects

Past research indicates that community stakeholders in infrastructure projects are often not effectively engaged, leading to issues such as conflicts and project delays. While there is extensive literature on traditional stakeholder engagement, there is a lack of guidance for engaging external stakeholders in the context of social media availability. 

This newly published PMI-funded research led by the University of Sydney addressed this very question, drawing upon case study evidence, and posing the question: “Which adjustments to project stakeholder identification, assessment, and response strategies are advisable if the project aspires to engage project community stakeholders via social media?”

The objective of the research was to see whether conventional approaches to stakeholder analysis and response strategies remain effective when engaging stakeholders online, offering insights for both theory and practice.

The case study of the Western Sydney International Airport development analyzed community interactions on Facebook, revealing challenges in traditional stakeholder analysis but possibilities in thematic, sentiment, and emotion analyses of social media content. The study creates a framework for improving engagement strategies through social media.
