Developing Effective Interventions for Gender Equality in Project-Based Organizations

Gender equality is a key element of sustainability, representing the fifth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). It also relates to the eighth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of “decent work and economic growth,” which “promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”

Whilst different interventions are in place for addressing gender inequality in project-based organizations—and particularly construction—there is no systematic analysis on which interventions exist, which work, which do not, and the reasons behind them. The knowledge on this topic in scientific literature is anecdotal, incomplete, and scattered in different fields and journals.

The PMI-sponsored research Developing Effective Interventions for Gender Equality in Project-Based Organizations aims to address the gap by identifying relevant interventions, developing a taxonomy, evaluating their effectiveness, and uncovering the underlying factors that contribute to their outcomes. This will contribute to deriving clear guidelines and strategies on how barriers and challenges for women in project-based organizations can be addressed.
