There is a moment in every complex system when you understand the most important forces shaping it are the ones no one sees. In healthcare, that invisible layer sits in the timing between appointments, in the handoff between departments, in the way information moves or stalls, and in the quiet assumptions that determine how care unfolds.

Most people experience these instances as inconvenience or delay, but they are actually signals of the underlying structure. These realities aren’t theoretical; they show up in the lives of the people moving through them.

My experience as a patient navigating rare diagnoses taught me how fragile continuity can be, revealing the small breaks that shape how care unfolds and accumulate over time. In advocacy, those breaks became visible in the practical work of documenting, escalating, and tracking care across settings never designed to speak to one another.

Inside operations, and later in my work with the National Alliance on Ending Health Disparities, I began to recognize these moments as early signs of strain that repeat across communities and often go unnoticed until they reach the patient. Collectively, these observations formed a lens that shows what is working, what is missing, and what is possible.
