Are Wii There Yet?
You may have heard of the Wii (a fifth-generation video game console by Nintendo that is distinguished by its wireless controller design) and you may have also heard of Second Life (an Internet-based virtual world where its users interact through customizable avatars and surroundings), but have you heard these two seemingly unrelated technologies are being adapted into a potential partnership?
Going a significant step beyond the concepts of simple avatars bumping into each other in chat rooms to carry on basic conversations and perform scripted movements, researchers are looking into new ways in which to perform functions in a virtual world so that they more closely approximate those embedded in reality.
As awkward as it is for the novice to go into Second Life and become accustomed to its navigation and other features, there are a number of individuals who are using it as an international tool for communication. They are finding its diversity and visual appeal a way in which they can draw others to their corporate sites or even do business within the boundaries of Second Life itself. It is true that real money may not be exchanged between “residents”, as the virtual citizens are called, but there are ways in which those online bucks can be translated into hard currency.
