To Blog or Not to Blog

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. He has also established corporate library solutions to provide frameworks for sales, marketing, training, and support divisions.

To paraphrase the bard, that is in fact the question. Many people see that using company phones and e-mail for personal business is somewhat discretionary, but it can be a difficult decision for some as to whether or not we should in fact blog, especially since many are “addicted” to its charms.
 
Used properly as a company communication tool, the act of blogging can be very effective. Improper use though can lead to disciplinary action including termination.
 
Level One
There is the first level of decision-making where we decide whether or not it is appropriate to blog during company time (and using company equipment). However, it’s simple to mentally justify the activity if we are doing so in the name of corporate research, problem-solving, keeping in touch with cohorts or industry contacts, or performing similar company-serving goals.
 
If we find that we are not blogging in the interest of our employer, though, we can try to rationalize the action by saying that we will perform some kind of compensatory activity like working during lunch, overtime or during the weekend to make up the difference. You can try as hard as you can to make a case for it--but it is doubtful that your company’s employee handbook has a mention anywhere of condoning the task.
