Social Media and the Role of Project Management
With social media continuing to gain traction in the marketplace it is an easy bet to say it’s here to stay. New business models continue to be developed, marketing professionals are designing campaigns to leverage individual social media profiles and colleges and training centers are offering new programs and certifications on the same topic.
But what about the project management profession? Should we contain ourselves to the delivery of projects that have a social media component? Should we continue to measure our success by the common project management metrics of “on time, on budget per negotiated scope”? My response to that is, of course, no! The marketplace is changing, and our profession needs to change as well.
Before we get started, a few “stats” are necessary as PM Network magazine recently published a study regarding how project managers are using social media on their projects: 181 people responded, showing that LinkedIn remains the most popular social media tool for professionals; 85 percent of the respondents used social media to stay in touch with friends; 48 percent used social media for document sharing; 36 percent used it to stay in touch with team members; 27 percent used social media for status updates; 25 percent for managing teams; and 24 percent to communicate to project stakeholders
