PMO Repository: The Critical Ingredient
Guidance provided by the PMO to project managers must be accessible and relevant. The repository for this guidance, then, must be designed with these two requirements in mind whether you are starting or upgrading the repository. To really make the resource come alive, design beyond the static repository by integrating social media. These critical steps will help with an upgrade or with establishing your first repository.
Creating or upgrading your repository is a project. Here are suggested steps on what you need to accelerate this project.
Plan
Consider two groups here: the project managers, essentially the targets of the repository; and the PMO. The PMO is the group that will be successful if the repository meets its objectives.
- Involve as many PMs as possible; they know what they need most in your environment.
- Show them the basic design and ask where the most trouble is now so that you can prioritize that area. This will get buy-in for the entire restructuring.
- Involve the PMO to incorporate solutions to existing problems. Project managers may not know that certain inadequacies in their performance are causing problems determined to be serious by the PMO.
- Find anyone from the above two groups that will be able to help with the detailed design.
- Compile all templates and guidance available that fill the existing gaps.
