Combating Resource Management Pitfalls
Resource management is a crucial part of any project manager’s job and is indispensable in assigning available resources, scheduling projects and milestones, and making the necessary adjustments to the plan as problems and changes arise, quickly and efficiently. It encompasses the employee, financial and distribution requirements of project resources. Efficient management of employee resources puts projects on the road to success. On the same token, failing to manage resources properly can lead to project blunders, overtime, budget overflow and other damaging results.
There are several common areas where project managers suffer in resource management capabilities:
- They don’t have strong processes. Having procedures and policies in place ensures all resources have the information they require to do their jobs well. Without these standards, the expectations of resources may not align, ultimately effecting project deliverables.
- They lack information on capacity needs. Project managers need an accurate estimate on how many hours and what kind of skillsets will be necessary for a project in order to plan and assign tasks and resources accordingly.
