Green PM: How Have Things Changed?

Michael R. Wood is a Business Process Improvement & IT Strategist Independent Consultant. He is creator of the business process-improvement methodology called HELIX and founder of The Natural Intelligence Group, a strategy, process improvement and technology consulting company. He is also a CPA, has served as an Adjunct Professor in Pepperdine's Management MBA program, an Associate Professor at California Lutheran University, and on the boards of numerous professional organizations. It has been three years since my article “The Green Grade: How Green Should Your PM Practices Be?” and it seems like a good time to revisit the subject to see how Green PM has evolved since 2012--and to provide you with a quick way to learn more.

To begin with, there are a number of websites focused on promoting Green PM practices, including:

Green-pm.com provides a good working definition of Green PM as follows:

 “Green project management is a model where we think green throughout our project and make decisions that take into account the impact on the environment--if any. It is a way to ingrain ‘greenthink’ into every project management process.

The point about green project management is not that we make every decision in favor of the one that is most environmentally friendly. The point is that we start to take the environment into account instead of ignoring it.”

So what has changed since 2012? First of all, you can now get Green PM certified through greenprojectmanagement.org. Certifications from this organization come in three levels:
