After-Hours Ethics
The Project Management Institute’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct states in the first paragraph: “We set high standards for ourselves and we aspire to meet these standards in all aspects of our lives--at work, at home, and in service to our profession.” My question is: What exactly does “at home and in service to our profession” mean?
Everyone knows I’m a project manager
I have friends whose profession ranges from sales to veterinarians to executive directors to financial analysts. Many of us met through the competitive activities our daughters are involved in. Through the years, we have come to know each other well and have a good idea of what we do to pay the high costs of competitive sports.
They all know I am a project manager. It’s somewhat assumed that the project manager in the group is best suited to be the manager and treasurer of the team. Since I am always asking about the team schedule and budget, I might as well be the one organizing both. I also enjoy being involved in community-based events where a charity or not-for-profit needs help organizing their philanthropic efforts.
As a long-standing PMP, clearly the PMI Code of Ethics applies to me. As noted above, the standards apply well beyond my time in the office.
