Not every organization has all the resources necessary to execute projects at any given time. If project work is not consistent, then there may be gaps where people are released or choose to seek other employment. If the organization does not constantly engage in project work and does not have the overhead needed to maintain a bench of resources, then there may be a need to go outside the organization to hire contractors, consultants or temporary positions to work on projects.

In many cases, then can be a positive experience for all involved, but it must be managed correctly—and there should be solid reasoning for outsourcing and a solid plan for managing those resources. These reasons should be fully understood before an organization can jump into outsourcing project work.

One-Time Expertise
One of the biggest advantages of outsourcing is to bring in someone with skills and expertise that your organization needs temporarily. Whether it is for a multi-year project or a short two- or three-month project, you may need coding or software skills for that short time but do not have the need to hire a full-time permanent resource.
