In the closing webinar for our September Book Club: The Optimistic Workplace; Creating an Environment That Energizes Everyone, the presenter wasn’t able to address all of the questions during the Q&A session. Here, he tackles more questions that came out of that session.
1. How do you get introverts/shy people engaged?
Give introverted team members time to think. Send agendas 24 to 48 hours before the meeting. Follow up with quiet people after the meeting. Ask them to share their ideas in meetings.
2. How do you deal with millenials that don’t go the extra mile?
Handle them the same way you would anyone else. Have a conversation and inquire about what’s going on, and then reinforce performance expectations. Use purpose to motivate intrinsically.
3. How do you have a good environment when the economy and market in your country is a big mess and everybody isn’t happy?
Central to an optimistic workplace are three elements: purpose, meaningful work and extraordinary people. It doesn’t cost money to focus on these three areas. Help people understand how their work aligns with the big picture. Focus on learning what meaningful work looks like for your team. And spend time developing people’s skill sets.
