Virtual Project Consulting
It used to be that consultants were revered and admired, somewhat of thought of as deep thinkers—people with highly qualified insights into a specific subject matter. Their opinions and views were sought after and they appeared in the press on occasion. But that is far from being the typical case these days.
Today, in many cases consultants are temporary help (part time or hired) and paid to support a specific point of view. An interesting comment was made about 18 months ago. A management consultant I have known for over two decades told me, “There are so many individuals that just call themselves ‘consultant’ to fill the employment gap on their resume it isn’t funny.”
She went on to recall the definition from the “old days”: A consultant is someone you call in from at least 100 miles away that tells you something you already knew and who will charge you a few hundred dollars an hour. Now compare the two descriptions. Wow, how time has changed!
Stat: Multiple studies have shown that 80 percent of managers currently deal with dispersed teams.
So what is the implications on projects? The big and most-often-asked question from my perspective is: What is the next “big thing” in project management that specifically has something to do with consulting?
After a fair amount of analysis, my answer is: virtual
