Communications in Public Sector Projects
My role in project management has evolved into primarily being a sponsor since becoming an elected official, and I have come to realize that very few things upset property owners more than not knowing what is going on in their neighborhood or town.
During the recent election campaign, I heard from thousands of residents about wanting to know about—and be able to provide input into—initiatives taking place in our town. Residents pay substantial property taxes, and at a minimum have a right to know about projects in their areas. The town’s chief administrative officer (CAO) is new in her role, but thankfully comes with a project management background. She understands the need for effective communications and is having a positive influence on her senior management team and, correspondingly, throughout the organization.
Effective communication is crucial for the success of all public sector projects. It is a vital tool that allows project managers and stakeholders to share information, collaborate and make informed decisions. The public sector is arguably unique in that it often involves a wide range of stakeholders, including multiple levels of government, community members, and private sector organizations. Enhanced communication can help build trust and ensure that all stakeholders are on the same page throughout the project.
