Thriving Together: Embrace Equity with Cultural Intelligence
In celebration of International Women’s Day and International Women’s Month, I attended a virtual conference on March 7 for the Women PowerUP Network—a global community of women. The first keynote session for the event was on cultural intelligence and how it can help us to re-emerge stronger and without boundaries in this world.
As I listened to the keynote by Dr. Catherine Wu, a cultural intelligence evangelist and interculturalist, I realized that cultural intelligence is a powerful skill—one that can enable leaders to build high-performing teams.
I took to heart the phrase that everyone is talking about this month, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day: “Embrace Equity,” which is a campaign to get the world to think about why equal opportunities alone aren't enough. “People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action,” notes the campaign.
As I retrospect, I realize that while we are all talking about equitable policies, rules and mindsets, maybe we need to think about our cultural intelligence as well. What is cultural intelligence? According to Wikipedia, it is the ability to relate and work effectively across cultures.
