True - End results is what matters but working place is a factor can affect positively or negatively.
Great idea but should not cost more to project. Can sit anywhere except roof top.

End results matters. Also agree that flexible working has shown results in many cases.
What about the proven processes to get the results? How the team building is done in flexible workplaces? Is virtual environment works in all kind of project?

All of my projects in the past 10 years had globally dispersed teams. Whether I work in an office in Boston, or my home on Cape Cod makes no difference in team building.

@Robert: Have you ever done a pipeline construction project in Dubai (consider flexible working) with your team which is sitting in Spain, UK and India?
It may works as a white collar consultant job on Laptop, but not in site construction management.

I'd figure it out from afar. Haha!

@Pankaj: Video conferencing? Skype? Facetime? Does everyone speak a common language even though everyone is in different countries or is this a multi-lingual project?

Rachel: It doesn''t work in construction jobs. You must have someone to manage the jobs at site. Your PMO can coordinate with sites through many ways(VC, Skype, facetime etc), still they need to visit project sites frequently. Generally construction sites are far away from main areas. It helps in monitoring & controlling of the projects, experience sharing and for development of confidence and trust among the teams.
In multi-lingual environment we need a common language to understand each other during work. This is the reason English/ French/ Spanish/ Portuguese are second language of many countries.

I agree with Pankaj with one comment, that English is considered the first language of speaking in many countries and even contractual wise.

@Pankaj and Rami: Very interesting! Thank you for broadening my understanding in this area!

I once had an opportunity to interview for a large construction company that built docks and piers. I wondered what it was like to actually see the fruits of our labor.
