I think the "dull boy" line comes from the movie "The Shining".

"All work, no play, makes Jack a dull boy." It's actually a proverb from the 1600s according to Wikipedia.
Someone added a second line "All play and no work makes Jack merely a toy."
:)
My mother used to quote the first line to me as well.
