When you address your project team or stakeholders, it is important that the language you use be appropriate and correct.

Your language is appropriate when the words used match your purpose and your audience. For example, if your purpose is to inspire people, you will need to use words that bring about emotions in your audience. If you are sharing a story, use plenty of names and descriptive words.

Your language is correct when your audience pays attention to what you say, not how you say it. Be careful about grammar and how you enunciate your words. Take care when stating people’s names. Keep your words, sentences and paragraphs short.

Make the language work for you and your audience.  The message will come through loud and clear.

Very true Stephen and very important at the same time as it is a management skill.

Absolutely right, Stephane. I am also in line with Rami.
Just a short story to illustrate a bit: as PMO Manager I used to work with a pure british Project Director. One of his quality focus was to chase the spelling mistakes and wrong wording in any written project documents. Even if it was difficult and time consuming for most of the non-british team members (including myself!), it was essential to give a professional image to our Customer and to improve the effectiveness of communication.

And if the grammar you use is not getting through to the people you are speaking to, be prepared to change your grammar. I am on a team with several people who's first language is not English. Sometimes the words I use may not be a word they understand. So I need to restate the information using different words.

Sure, you are right. One thing is to know about a subject and another to know how to talk about it.
