Oh it seemed like such a progressive idea. Allow certain workers to write blogs and use them as fun and inexpensive ways to promote the company. What could go wrong? Who needs a policy? Just tell them to use common sense!

Riggghhht. Here’s where we are now:
  • 39% of bloggers admit they have posted comments that could be construed as harmful to their company’s reputation. This includes compromising sensitive and proprietary data, mind you.
  • One 8-year employee of an airline was disciplined for “inappropriate” pictures on her blog. Not too little clothing (you naughty reader, you) but her and her friends in uniform. After removing the pictures, she finds no corporate policy - and similar pictures all over the web. She meets with management, which results in her filing a federal sex discrimination lawsuit. (Not heard in the hall after the meeting: “That went well.”) The anti-climax? She has been fired.
  • You probably already heard about the Google employee who took down material he admitted was a mistake. He said on his blog that Google was “cool” about the whole thing. That was before he reported that he was fired.
Look, this is little different than when e-mailing became popular. Now we have e-mail policies. It’s time for you to develop a blogging policy before you end up in a similar situation. It's just a matter of time.
