In line with my recent postings about Agile/Scrum being deployed outside software development, here's a TED video about a sports car called "Wikispeed" that was built and deployed using Scrum and crowdsourcing:

 

 

As further proof of this movement in the auto industry, I saw this job posting on GM's job site for an Agile Coach/ScrumMaster position.  It does a fairly good job of describing the position that is in line with Agile/Scrum practices:

The agile coaching team is a core part of the GM IT transformation to deliver software faster, and with strong business focus. The team of agile coaches supports this historical transformation by developing agile best practices, providing training and active mentoring on projects. We are the “How To” team for Agile development... 

The Agile Coach is not only an expert in agile techniques but is also adept at change management through influence and facilitation. This role will work actively with the Project Manager and the development team to transform them to be a self managing SCRUM team. In this role, the Agile Coach conducts internal training sessions to the broader GM IT team to foster agile adoption. As the central role in helping GM IT to deliver software faster, the Agile Coach will have the unique opportunity to work on projects across the entire GM portfolio in functions such as product development, manufacturing, supply chain, sales, marketing, and finance.
 
It's interesting to see the continual adoption of Agile/Scrum outside of purely software development environments.  Are you witnessing such adoption where you work?

Great post Don and thanks for sharing. So exciting to see the continued adoption of Agile/Scrum outside of its original birthplace and domain. Of course, Agile and Agile/Scrum in particular are but one of the many colors of the Complex Adpative Systems (CAS) rainbow and movement. Over the last five decades, CAS has emerged from field of study, to theory, to practice. In fact, the Agile Manifesto was taken from the principles of CAS. Though relatively new, in the context of mainstream business management theory, CAS challenges and and some would say complements the traditional scientific management (Taylorism) and plan-driven approaches (traditional project management) that no doubt continue to be relative, useful, and have a place in today's business. In addition to Agile/Scrum, there are numerous other CAS techniques (Open Space Technology for example), so exciting to see the positive results that these CAS techniques are having as evidence by business success and take-up..!

Thanks Mark for your reply. I think these kinds of milestones indicate the increasingly widespread reach of project management in general. What we're witnessing here is where the inventor of Wikispeed found a useful project management method that originated in software development, that allowed him to build a highly modular automobile that was prototyped and tested in iterations, so that it could be delivered quicker and cheaper than conventional methods. That these project management methods and practices are cutting across diverse industries indicates how portable and transformative the field is. It's indeed a great and exiting time to be in the field!
