On Thursday, April 30, the University of Maryland Project Management Center for Excellence has just unveiled full program details for the second annual Project Management Symposium, taking place June 8-9 on the university’s campus in College Park, Maryland.

Attendees will be able to personalize their experience by selecting session tracks which benefit their development the most - whether it's learning about people in projects, construction, agile/IT, project management methodology, risk and big data, federal programs, education, public private partnerships, and/or sustainability. With over 60 field experts under one roof, p roject managers across industry, government, and academe will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills and get a first look at how today’s trends will shape the future of project management.

So, without further adieu, the agenda includes:

  • (People in Projects) “A Not So Unexpected Journey: Communicating for Results,” by Tasha Boone (U.S. Census Bureau) and Emily Allen (MITRE Corporation, LLC)
  • (Agile/IT) “10 Agile Principles – Taking the Steps to Agile Success,” by Myles D. Miller (SUCCESSHQ)
  • (Education) “Mentoring the Next Generation of Project Managers,” by Todd Carothers (University of Wisconsin – Platteville)
  • (Sustainability) “Planning, Implementing and Measuring Sustainability,” by William J. Bertera (Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure), Crystall D. Merlino (Department of Defense, Office of the Secretary of Defense), and Lidia Berger (Dewberry)
  • (Risk & Big Data) “Project Intelligence through Data Science and Process Mining,” by William Brantley (University of Maryland)

In addition to providing project managers with an unmatched learning experience, this year’s symposium will offer a networking reception on Monday afternoon, bringing together experts from across the country and around the world. Even more, PMI members can earn up to 15 professional development units (PDUs) toward maintaining their PMI credential.

Project Management in a Time of Need

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

I’m sure many of us have been following the news about the recent and devastating earthquake that took place in Nepal this past Saturday.  Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were lost in the disaster, and to all of those impacted and starting the difficult journey of recovery.

As a professional community of project managers, many of you may be wondering how to best support the work of responding to crisis, and rebuilding after a disaster, while others among us may have their own experiences and lessons learned that can be shared with those who are involved in these efforts.

I would like to use our Critical Path blog space this week to create a space where community members can:

  • identify relevant resources for disaster recovery
  • highlight organizations and agencies that are actively working to support the people of Nepal in this time of crisis
  • share personal experiences in disaster recovery in an effort to help capture effective practices and lessons learned

Please keep in mind, when working in dangerous environments where time and safety are critical, it is important to work through established channels and support those organizations and agencies actively involved.

Be safe and be generous with your knowledge – the experience you share may be able to help those in need to better manage the process of recovery and rebuilding.

Adam Steltzner
Lead Landing Engineer of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover Project

With a rich and varied background, Adam Steltzner had many of the needed skills to lead the landing team for the Curiosity rover. That said, his team would struggle for almost a decade with design challenges and setbacks. How did he keep the team focused and on task? What makes a team gel and enables truly innovative thinking? How do team dynamics drive that process forward or inhibit it? And how can organizational culture create an environment for sustained performance? The challenges he and the team faced and the lessons learned from those struggles can help audiences understand how to better lead their high-performing teams, manage innovation and drive toward excellence.

Now in its eighth year, ProjectManagement.com's PMXPO is an annual virtual conference and exhibition that presents a day of informative sessions featuring industry experts, along with booths full of valuable takeaway materials. Sign up for the free event today!

Focus On: Sustainability/Green PM

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

April 2015’s focus on ProjectManagement.com is sustainability and green project management. Not sure what that is? We have a diverse offering of articles and resources to help you learn more and implement sustainability and green project management into what you do.

Green PM: How Have Things Changed?

Michael Wood last wrote about green project management in 2012. But how have things changed since then? Take a few moments to read his article which takes a look at certifications, resources, and other tools to help keep you sustainable.

Project Manager’s Sustainability Checklist

Tom Baker and Pedro Echeverria came together to create a checklist that is specifically design to help meet sustainability needs that project teams and project managers face. This checklist can be considered a template to be modified by an organization, or even by a project team, as needed.

Sustainability Survey

Around the world, people, communities and organizations have begun a profound transformation toward Sustainability. Sustainability is sometimes called the Triple Bottom Line,  referring to long term viability not just from a financial standpoint (“Profit”), but also from environmental (Planet) and social (People) perspectives.  This survey will gather important information about project managers' motivations, skills, and needs with respect to Sustainability. This data will help PMI and projectmanagement.com gain a baseline about this field and create the possibility of assisting project managers who have an interest in Sustainability.

Thanks to Tom Baker, Kris Kohl, and Pedro Echeverria for collaborating to bring this valuable survey to the community.

Keep your eye on the homepage throughout the month for more sustainability and green PM information. You can also visit the Sustainability practice area for additional information and resources.

Don’t forget that 22 April is Earth Day!
