This basic outline of a project charter gives you the following framework points for you to flesh out:

  • Executive summary (overview)
  • Strategic business alignment (specific strategic initiatives and stakeholders)
  • Project definition (mission, objective, scope, major deliverables, quality specifications, assumptions, constraints, resource requirements, material and equipment procurement, time estimate, preliminary budget, major risks and information requirements)
  • Related products and deliverables (overview)
  • Approvals and appendices

This is a great outline to use if you want to create a classic project charter. The emphasis in this outline is on high-level project definition and ties to the overall busienss strategy. Risks and stakeholder requirements are covered, but not fleshed out in detail--which is often the case with low-risk projects that must be executed within aggressive timeframes.
