What are you view on career Coach? For you or a team member?

Do you believe it is good early in your career? or later to keep improving?

When have you used on? How did you identify the right coach for you?

How did you perceive benefit from it?

Hi Vincent,

Well, I'm actually in the road to get the title as Scrum Coach and what I guess is that it's a huge responsibility to assume this role. I guess that coaching role must be awarded once you feel that can truly support a team as its coach, on every case can take more or less time, but it is important to be confident at the moment you reach that level.

I've been on the other side, receiving coaching sessions and for me is important feeling comfortable with the person whos in front of you listening and giving you feedback.

A career coach can help me to identify my interest and possible career options for me. It is my prerogative to opt one or not. So as per me career coach may be much needed at the time when the career is at the crossroads. You have to decide this way or that way...??? Improving the word which should be always in. I have never used any career coach but now I may be looking out for one.

Ashutosh,

Thank for your input in the discussion, often an external point of view Help, so the coach is excellent.

A career coach can help to provide a different perspective on your ideas of how things work; whether it is with a current situation, career aspirations within the current organization, or looking to move to a new organization or field.

I used a career coach a couple years ago. He was recommended to me. We had an initial call of an hour or so to make sure it was the right fit. He talked about his approach, technique, and background, while I explained my background and goals. From there we set up recurring sessions. Some options are to remain connected via a medium such as phone or Skype, or if nearby, in-person.

Much can be learned with interview and negotiation techniques, which, in turn, will add new confidence and perspective when in those situations.

Investing in a career coach an investment in yourself.

Since learning is great at any stage of life or career, utilizing a coach for areas we struggle or need assistance with is a good idea.

Sante,

We should be able to ask for assistance from people around us not just from a coach.

There are many choices to look for support: Mentor, Coach or Sponsor.

It's good to do your homework and seek to find one or more of the above. It is a personal and professional choice and commitment.

Just know that there are many with and without the above titles, like family, friends and colleagues who you know and that can provide guidance and feedback.

It's a personal choice; only you can decide and make choices about the goals and benefits for short and long term relationships you choose to make.

Thanks Naomi,

I can see the similarities with coach and mentor, but I’m not clear on sponsor in that kind of role. I see sponsor at a project level, but for a coaching role I don’t.

You are so right that we can find in the people closest to us some mentor or coach.
