If it is accepted that AI is (can be) good at managing repetitive, tedious, time-consuming tasks, which of the following would be most desirable to have AI manage?
- Following up on action items
- Creating status reports
- Updating project schedules
- Meeting minutes (taking, summarizing, pulling out action items and next steps)

While AI tools could help with any of those, most can be done currently using non-AI tools. For example, most EPM/PPM tools are able to create status reports, action item follow up can be done using simple workflow capabilities, project schedules should be updated based on team member input and most scheduling tools can support that, and meeting minutes could be transcribed with most conferencing software.

Where AI can make a difference is in providing decision support to reduce the likelihood of bad decisions being made.

@Kiron - agree that there are non-AI tools to perform these functions, however, I have found that those EPM/PPM tools are designed to work only (not completely) within their environments/platforms. Within our PM world there is a need to encompass many applications and formats, and this is where I see AI tools providing an enhanced capability. Thanks for your perspective.

I think like what Kiron mentioned, there are some non-AI tool that does this effectively.

From my side, for now, I feel comfortable with having AI create status reports and Meeting minutes, however, the PM should verify any outcome of AI.

Can you give details about these non-ai tools mentioned? How do they work? Are automated? From where do they get the inputs?

The ones which Larry had specifically mentioned in his original post don't require data from past projects, only the current project. As an example, the online version of MS Project is able to receive task updates from team members and update the schedule accordingly. Similarly, Zoom & MS Teams both support transcription of meetings which can be used as the basis for minutes.

My recommendation is taking a look to this: https://www.pmi.org/shop/p-/elearning/gene...-managers/el083
No matter it is about generative AI only.
Most of the items you listed above can be solved by creating automation which is not AI.
