For mentees it is knowing when the objectives you originally had for seeking a mentor have been met. Once that happens, you and your mentor need to determine if there are new objectives for which the mentor can provide support or does it make sense to transition away.

For mentors it is to take the time to understand the context the mentee is facing before providing support.

The best advice I can give is: show up with honesty and openness. Whether you’re a mentor or a mentee, the relationship only grows when both sides are willing to be transparent about what they know, what they don’t, and what they hope to learn.
When you bring authenticity to the table, the connection becomes richer, and the learning becomes more real.

Reflecting on my experiences, my advice would be: “Be open and committed, whether as a mentor or mentee, the value comes from active listening, honest feedback, and a willingness to learn from each other.” Mentorship is most effective when both sides treat it as a partnership, focused on growth and practical insights.
