What is one decision you made in a project that had a lasting impact beyond the project itself?

One decision I made was to shift focus from short-term delivery to building internal capability within the client team. Instead of just executing the project end-to-end, we invested time in documentation, knowledge transfer, and mentoring their team to independently manage the solution.

The immediate project was successful—but the real impact showed later. The client became self-sufficient, reduced long-term dependency, and was able to scale similar initiatives on their own.

It reinforced a powerful lesson: the most valuable outcome of a project is not what you deliver, but what continues to grow after you leave.

This is a powerful shift—from delivery to enablement. Many projects succeed on paper but fail in continuity. Building internal capability ensures the value compounds over time. It raises an important question: should self-sufficiency become a standard success metric in project management?

That’s a strong decision.
Focusing on capability instead of just delivery changes the impact completely. The project ends, but the value keeps going.
Not all projects make space for that, but when they do, it makes a clear difference.

Loved this reflection. One similar decision for me was choosing to slow down delivery slightly so I could build capability in the client team. The project finished well, but the real win came later when they ran future work confidently on their own. Sometimes the impact that matters most is the confidence and clarity we leave behind. What shaped your approach on that project?
